The word "docent" is derived from the Latin word docere which means "to teach." In the United States, the word is frequently used to identify trained volunteer educators.
WHO ARE NACHUSA’S DOCENTS? Nachusa’s volunteer docents range in age and knowledge. They all have a passion for conservation, prairies, bison and everything involving Nachusa Grasslands. In addition, all the docents enjoy talking to people about their passion.
VOLUNTEER DOCENTS:
Have a friendly personality, with effective communication skills, and the desire to talk with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Have an active interest in Nachusa.
Enjoy being outdoors, especially in the summer.
Dependable, reliable, and able to make a commitment of service, volunteering for three hours in the morning or afternoon. We ask that docents volunteer at least once a month.
Willing to read and learn the provided materials on their own, gaining more interpretation skills over time.
Willing to help others and have the skills to remain calm and tactful with varying visitor personalities.
