RiverWatch at Nachusa Grasslands
To learn more about volunteering as a stream monitor, please complete the form on the "About Community Scientists" page.
The Illinois RiverWatch Network is a volunteer stream monitoring program that seeks to engage Illinois adults by training them as community scientists. Each year at adopted stream sites in their communities, community scientists conduct habitat and biological surveys, including the collection and identification of small stream organisms called macroinvertebrates that serve as bioindicators of water quality. The program strives to collect consistent, high-quality data on the conditions of local streams and provide volunteers with a hands-on opportunity to be better stewards of our watersheds.
Nachusa's participation in the RiverWatch program began in 2014, led by trained community scientists and assisted by untrained volunteers. Over the years, four waterways — Wade Creek, Johnny Creek, Clear Creak, and Babbling Brook — have been surveyed in May and June.
